Looking for an affordable yet vibrant city in the Northeast to rent in? Maybe a place with charming, century-old brick structures and delightful architecture, where renting a place doesn’t equal breaking the bank? Au contraire, you could have more space to enjoy than you would in other major urban hubs on the East Coast for the same price. If you haven’t guessed by now, we’re talking about Philadelphia.

If you like the idea but don’t know where to start, we got you covered. Here is a list of the most affordable neighborhoods in Philadelphia:

1. Northwood

Northeast Philly offers quite a few affordable neighborhoods and Northwood is one of them. The area features a good mix of shops and restaurants. If you’re thinking about relocating to this little corner of Philadelphia, you’ll become part of a diverse community with plenty of green spaces nearby. Many renters here enjoy the convenience of various amenities.

2. Walnut Hill

If you’re a social person, you’ll probably want to stick to this one. Just south of neighboring Dunlap, Walnut Hill offers residents a dense urban feel. Renting an apartment here means joining the majority of apartment dwellers who call this neighborhood home. Oh, and there are plenty of bars, coffee shops, and parks around. Walnut Hill is a great place for shoppers too, with vibrant Walnut Street being the perfect destination for some retail therapy.

3. Dunlap

If you’re easily bored, check out this small neighborhood located in West Philadelphia, also known as the most eclectic part of town. Dunlap is primarily residential and features a mix of rowhouses and single-family homes — but if you’re an apartment hunter, you’ll have quite a few options to choose from. If you love being out in the town, know that there are quite a few interesting eateries and bars in the area. Another major plus for those renting here is that the bustling University City is just a (very) short drive away.

4. Logan

Located in North Philadelphia, Logan is home to a diverse community of residents. If you’re looking for a neighborhood with a rich history, this is the place for you: Logan has several historic landmarks, including the Logan Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia.

The area might strike a chord with art-loving renters, as there are quite a few cultural points to check out just north of West Roosevelt Boulevard. You can check out Stenton — country home of James Logan, colonial mayor of Philadelphia — and the La Salle University Art Museum, which features six galleries showcasing sketches, paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance to the present day.

5. Wissinoming

Wissinoming is located in Northeast Philadelphia and boasts a population of approximately 36,000. If you’re looking to rent in an affordable area with easy access to plenty of open, green spaces, this could be your match. The 40-acre Wissinoming Park, one of the largest in the city, will surely become your go-to spot for some fresh air, a workout or enjoying your favorite book.

Renters living here also appreciate the plethora of shopping centers and grocery stores. While families tend to love Wissinoming for its array of organized sports facilities for children, the real “star” of the neighborhood seems to be the diverse restaurant scene. Famous food critics have described it as unmatched in all of Philly.
