I've lived at 35W for more than 4 years. PROs Great location Modern & well maintained Responsive service staff CONs It's SO LOUD. While I rarely hear other tenants, the work at the Bedrock construction site is torture at times. It's a major inconvenience for those that WFH and Bedrock raises rents instead of insisting they not start work until 8am or giving tenants a break on increases. There is zero bike storage and you cannot use another Bedrock building. You will have a very hard time fitting your bike in the tiny elevator. Speaking of which - they modified the elevator after I moved in. Be very careful before assuming your furniture will fit. I wanted to move a couch out of my place and it's not very bulky. We had to carry it down 9 flights of stairs.

    3.5/5 Laurie M. on May 17, 2020

I absolutely love living at 35W. The building is very well designed and maintained and I feel safe here. The staff is on their game and very kind. I love the Capitol Park location. However, it is LOUD beyond belief. It's not just the garbage pick ups super early in the morning - the constant beeping that comes from the truck or the dumpsters that get dropped loudly one after another - often around 6AM. Lately, it's the unbearably loud motorcycles and loud music coming from vehicles speeding up and down Woodward and on weekends it can last until or after midnight. It's also the construction which I'll forgive since it's great to see the city being rebuilt. But I've been listening to a loud, piercing, high pitched beep out my window for an hour so far. Other cities like Boston enforce noise ordinances. If Detroit wants to attract residents it will need the funds to do so. I'd rather not keep my windows shut all summer but it's coming to that point. Still, if you're willing to put up with the noise and want to live in the great city of Detroit, I'd highly recommend checking out 35W.

Overall, apartment is nice. However, heat is loud in bedroom, fridge style is out-of-date, floors are uneven, and there is no additional storage space/locker.

    3/5 patrick m. on Dec 11, 2023

We are longtime tenants and never have seen the elevator situation this bad or so poorly handled. We are pregnant and need to be able to trust the elevators will work - especially this close to the due date. My wife had to wait downstairs for 20 minutes and I had to take the stairs 3 times on Saturday alone. I have been in contact with Brionna, our PM, but have seen about 0% in terms of progress or assurance that we can have an operational elevator. Figure it out! Hire an elevator attendant until you fix the issue.

    Detroit, MI in the news

    Living in Detroit, MI

    Living in location

As the most populous city in Michigan, Detroit offers many opportunities for renters. With its expanding employment market, big-city amenities and affordable living cost compared to similarly sized cities, it's a multicultural city that welcomes renters from every corner of the world. The city is also known for its connection to sports with several teams in major professional leagues, as well as plenty of recreation opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Detroit experiences a humid, continental climate characterized by four distinct seasons and average temperatures between 19°F and 84°F year-round. As such, those renting in Detroit should prepare for cold winters with plenty of snow, freezing temperatures and occasional snowstorms.

In Detroit's heart, the revitalization is palpable, with new developments and community projects bringing a fresh energy to the city. The Detroit Riverwalk and Eastern Market offer vibrant spaces for renters to gather, shop, and enjoy the city's scenic views and local produce. Detroit's historical significance is showcased in its architecture and museums, like the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Motown Museum, which pay homage to the city's rich cultural heritage. Education is a priority, with institutions such as Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies nurturing the next generation of professionals. The city's nightlife and entertainment scenes are on the rise, with an array of dining options, live music venues, and theaters providing endless entertainment options.

    Renting in Detroit, MI

Renting in Detroit is more affordable than similar cities across the nation. And, due to the revitalization efforts, renters can find a variety of rentals - from historic homes to repurposed apartment buildings and new constructions with modern amenities. Specifically, downtown Detroit, Corktown, and Midtown have many revitalized buildings with lofts and apartments for rent close to art galleries, brunch spots, bars and entertainment venues. Or, for renters looking for a calmer environment, Sherwood Forest, Indian Village, and Boston Edison are family-friendly neighborhoods with historical, single-family rentals; spacious lawns; and upscale amenities nearby. Notably, when renting in Detroit, landlords can ask for a security deposit (typically worth one month's rent), along with payment for the first month before moving in.

    Things for renting

    Shopping in Detroit, MI

There are plenty of retail options for shopping enthusiasts who rent in Detroit. For instance, downtown Detroit is home to a mix of national retailers, local boutiques and specialty stores, with the Woodward Corridor being the most popular among shoppers. Meanwhile, the biggest malls in Detroit include Fairlane Town Center, New Center One and Tower Center Mall. Renters are also close to Twelve Oaks Mall, which is one of the largest shopping malls in Michigan. Detroit also has many locally owned small businesses, particularly in Midtown, Corktown and West Village. Or, for everyday shopping, renters can find various grocery stores throughout Detroit, including Kroger, Meijer, Whole Foods Market, Aldi, and Save-A-Lot, as well as department stores like Macy's, Walmart, Target, JCPenney and T.J.Maxx. Otherwise, for renters looking to buy fresh produce, locally prepared food, plants and crafts, the Eastern Market is a historic public market in downtown Detroit that's open year-round.

    Transportation in Detroit, MI

Detroit's transportation infrastructure includes highways, public buses, and pedestrian and bike trails. However, the city is primarily car-dependent, so having a vehicle can be advantageous for getting around. To that end, the main highways used to get in and out of the city are interstates 75, 94 and 96; U.S. highways 12 and 24; and several state routes. Alternatively, for renters commuting via public transportation, the Detroit Department of Transportation and the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation operate bus services throughout the greater Detroit metropolitan area, including suburbs outside the city. Renters can also rely on the QLine - a streetcar system running along Woodward Avenue - and the Detroit People Mover, which is a small, elevated train that loops around downtown. Plus, with the city's revitalization, renters have access to an improved network of trails, thereby making getting around the city on foot or bike easier. Of course, ride-sharing services, like Uber and Lyft, are also available in Detroit. Finally, renters who rely on air travel are nine miles from Canada's Windsor International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which provide domestic and international flights.
